If possible, carry little cash and use ATM cards and credit cards more.
Good old cash is convenient, accepted everywhere and easy to use, but if it is stolen or lost, it cannot be replaced. On the other hand, ATM cards, credit cards and traveller’s cheques are replaceable with only minimal financial losses.
Besides providing access to money, most credit card plans today also offer travel assistance services, emergency transportation and medical help, etc.
Traveller’s Cheques are less popular nowadays because of the availability of ‘plastic money’. Nevertheless, there is no harm bringing along a few hundred dollars’ worth of them for emergency use.
